Books: Required

[Updated July 8, 2012]

Three books are required for this course in 2012:

Kern: Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide to Audio Journalism and Production (Amazon)

Kobré: Photojournalism, Sixth Edition: The Professionals’ Approach (Amazon)

Yau: Visualize This: The FlowingData Guide to Design, Visualization, and Statistics (Amazon)

These three books are highly readable and thoroughly professional. Each one contains more info than we can cover in the course. I expect you to buy all three and KEEP THEM, reading them cover-to-cover, to supplement what we are able to fit into the semester.

AP style: For all assignments, all students must follow AP style. To do this successfully, you must own (and frequently consult) a recent (2009 or later) edition of the Associated Press Stylebook (Amazon). Adherence to a consistent style in all written material (headlines, photo captions, online text, etc.) is considered a mark of professionalism among journalists.
